Main Content
The color sensor board has TCS230 color sensor. The TCS230 programmable color light-to-frequency converter combines configurable silicon photodiodes and a current-to-frequency converter on a single chip. The light-to-frequency converter consists of an 8x8 array of photodiodes with red, blue, green colored filters (16 photodiodes each) and 16 photodiodes with no filter. The photodiode filters can be selected using S2 and S3 pins.
The current-to-frequency converter generates frequency proportional to current generated by the photodiodes. Photodiode array and current to frequency converter together generate a square wave output (50% duty cycles) with frequency directly proportional to light intensity (irradiance). Output frequency scaling is also pin selectable (using S0 and S1 pins). Both frequency scaling and filter selection pins are pulled high on the module.
Four white LEDs are provided for better color recognition in low light conditions. The sensor generates frequency proportional to the intensity of light captured by the selected filtered photodiodes. On full scale, sensor generates 600 KHz pulses when saturated. Since the sensor has four types of filters, red, green, blue and clear (no filter), we get RGBY information of the color exposed to the sensor and hence can identify the color. The sensor can be used for object tracking.
